OUR PEOPLE

A Day in the Life – Sarah Newland

The Morning Slot
Top of the agenda every morning, is a quick check of my calendar for the day and my inbox. I’ll often receive emails looking for guidance or advice on HR issues that may have arisen the previous evening, so these will get my attention first thing.

Next up is always a quick check-in with my team – there are 6 of us in People Services – a small but perfectly formed, and amazing team! Most days, I’ll have meetings with our field-based operations managers, to stay in touch with what’s going on in their ‘patch’ and to provide any support they may need.”

The Three Rs
Recruitment, retention and reward are, for me, biggest challenges for our sector, especially given the comparatively low profit margins and the transient nature of the sector’s workforce.

Team Benefits
COVID positively changed perceptions of the work of hygiene teams and a key aspect of my role is to deliver a benefits package that attracts and retains the best people – across all areas of the business.

Weekends means wellies
Having three football-mad boys, keeps me busy most evenings and weekends, between getting them to and from training sessions, and watching games on the weekend, in all weathers.

My guilty pleasure
Can’t beat box sets to switch off at the end of a busy week and Jack Ryan on Netflix is my current guilty pleasure.

Words of wisdom?
Believe you can, and you’re halfway there! A bit of self-belief can go a long way in silencing that inner critic that is in all of us!
