The Evolution of Retail Cleaning: Adapting to New Norms and Technologies

In our latest blog, Mike Garrett, our Chief Operating Officer shares what he considers to be the key changes and trends shaping the future of retail cleaning.

Increased Focus on Health & Safety
Unsurprisingly, COVID-19 underscored the importance of rigorous cleaning and changed the perception and approach to retail sanitisation protocols. Retailers adapted quickly to ensure the safety of both employees and customers, and this heightened focus on health and safety has led to:

Daytime Cleaning Schedules & Frequency
One of the most noticeable changes I have witnessed has been the switch to daytime cleaning schedules for many of our blue-chip retail clients. This provides reassurances to customers and staff alike of the cleanliness of stores. It also provides visible hygiene teams to provide cleaning of high-touch surfaces such as door handles, shopping trolleys, and tills/checkout area.

Sanitisation Stations
Whilst less ubiquitous in stores now than at the start of the pandemic, many retail stores continue to provide easy access to hygiene solutions such as hand sanitisers for customers and staff.

Advanced Cleaning Technologies
Technological innovation is revolutionising retail cleaning, making it more efficient and effective. Recently at Interclean in Amsterdam, our senior team had the opportunity to check out the latest in cleaning technology and to consider their application for our retail clients, and the wider business too. It is fair to say that Excellerate as a disruptor in the sector, are early adopters of new technologies, and I am pleased to say that we have incorporated a range of new products such as UV-C light disinfection, cleaning robots and electrostatic sprayers, amongst other new technologies.

Sustainability
This is a growing concern for all of us, in business and as consumers, on how we protect our planet and our people, whilst keeping our focus on ensuring environments are safe and clean. We’re working closely with each of our clients to deliver eco-friendly cleaning solutions that include ‘green’ or biodegradable, non-toxic cleaning agents, to recommending water-saving equipment and reusable cleaning consumables such as mops and cloths. Waste reduction is also part of our broader sustainability efforts, with the introduction of recycling of equipment and consumables and a move away from single-use plastics in items such as cloths and mops.

Enhanced Training & Certification Training
Our team has always been a top priority. It allows us to develop our people and give them the knowledge and confidence when working in client stores or retail distribution sites. And it lets us deliver a consistent and reliable service too, with cleaning protocols implemented and followed across client sites. Comprehensive Health & Safety training is an important part of our service delivery too, and provides an extra layer of reassurance to our clients and our hygiene teams.

Transparency & Communication
There has been a seismic shift in this area as a direct result of the pandemic. Daytime cleaning schedules are now often combined with feedback boards that allow customers to report areas that need attention and, in many stores real-time updates share cleaning schedule information with visitors to key areas. Excellerate has successfully installed sensor and feedback technology across a wide range of retail, manufacturing, and office spaces, receiving very positive client feedback. Our hygiene teams can now clean high footfall areas such as washroom or tea points more frequently, respond quickly to negative customer feedback – delivering an ‘on-demand’ cleaning service tied to client and customer expectations.

As the retail cleaning landscape continues to evolve, driven by shifting consumer expectations and ongoing health and hygiene concerns, Excellerate Services remains at the forefront. By continually investing in Velocity, our proprietary data and tech-based solution, we are able to provide bespoke cleaning specifications tailored to each client’s specific needs.
